Levon Helm R.I.P.

The Band singer Levon Helm is dead at age 71 after a long battle with cancer, the Times Herald-Record reports. He passed away April 19 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

Electric Dirt (Dirt Farmer Music/Vanguard Records) is the second album in the last two years from American musical treasure Levon Helm. Its predecessor, Dirt Farmer, his first solo LP in a quarter century, followed Levons near-miraculous recovery from throat cancer, and as such represented a new lease on life for the legendary artist, who rose to prominence as the drummer and vocalist for Levon and the Hawks, which later became The Band.

O Emperors debut LP (nominated for Choice Music Prize 2010

There is a sense of quiet,
reserved confidence about Hither Thither, O Emperors debut LP (nominated for Choice Music Prize 2010). Many commentators have noted that it sounds more like the recording of a band on their third or fourth album, such is the display of maturity and self-awareness on show. This may be testament to the fact the band grew up together as childhood friends, discovering the same records, learning the same tunes and playing in the same venues with different bands in a thriving local music scene. You could say that although this record is their first, it is the result of many years of growing together musically, uncovering a collective identity and an acute awareness of the nuances that made their favourite records so special.

Sondre Lerche

Down came the sky

And all you did was blink

I would cry like I never do

In order to stay true

But everybody has their own opinion on such

They're all much alike alike alike

One hundred of a million is worth penning dead down

So why am I writing to the moon?

Dirty Three- Toward the Low Sun

Toward the Low Sun is what the Dirty Three do best: enigmatic instrumentals that redefine the notions of power in a power trio, a three-headed beast that trades off thoughts with nuance and grace, like a Cerebus dancing a waltz, then knocking back a beer at the bar. You can hear Ellis' aggressive, Grinderman scrape and buzz all over opener "Furnace Skies," one of their all-time best songs.

Say Anything- I want to know your plans

Lyrics:
I want to know your plans and how involved in them I am.
When I go to sleep for good will I be forgiven?
And If you want roses you can go buy a bouquet.
If that just won't cut it, well what can I say?

The Civil Wars

Photo: TheCivilWars.com
In some ways, music doesn't get much more modest or minimalist than it is in the hands of The Civil Wars, a duo comprised of California-to-Nashville transplant Joy Williams and her Alabaman partner, John Paul White. They travel without a backup band, and on their first full-length album, Barton Hollow, the bare-bones live arrangements that fans hear on the road are fleshed out with just the barest of acoustic accoutrements. Each song is an intimate conversation, and no third wheels or dinner-party chatter are going to interrupt that gorgeous, haunting hush.

Rae Morris- talented new singer/songwriter

Rae Morris 'reports of tears in the audience caused simply by a piano and her raw and powerful voice'
In the age of reality television and talent shows galore, it seems like it is easier than ever to become famous or successful in the music industry. As these methods of breaking into the music business becomes the ever more prevalent and popular option amongst the majority, how can a teenage singer-songwriter who doesn’t want to sell her soul push herself through the barrier of success?
Rae Morris has been grafting and working unbelievably hard over the past year and a half around Blackpool and the North-West, and even managing to secure more than one gig in London’s Camden Town, renowned for its alternative culture and music scene. Finding the time to fit this alongside her college studies is a commendable achievement. Now she’s finished her full-time education, she’s looking to her future in search of where to go from here. Having been put forward by BBC Introducing, she now has the chance to perform at one of Britain’s biggest festivals, Reading and Leeds. Reading on the Sunday, Leeds the Friday

“Because it’s come through BBC Introducing, I feel like I’ve done it myself. About 6 months ago I started doing the show with Radio Lancashire and they heard the very early demos that I put on Myspace, and I’ve done it about 3 or 4 times now and they just recommended me. I just got an email through one day saying they want me to play both BBC Introducing stages.]. It’s amazing. I can’t wait.”
